“ADVENT” (latin word -‘adventus’) = “Arrival or Coming”

The Four Themes of Advent = Hope, Love, Peace, Joy

(1 John 4:7-19) Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.19 We love because he first loved us.

Putting Christmas in the right perspective:

1) The reason for the season is sin.

(Matthew 1:18-21) This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”


(Luke 2:8-12) And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

2) The motive for the season is love.

(Genesis 22:2) " Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much —and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him …” (NLT)

(Matthew 3:17) And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

(John 3:16) “God so loved the world that He gave His One and only Son …”

(Romans 5:8) “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’ ESV

3) The response to the season is completely up to us.

If you’ve ever celebrated Christmas without an Easter,
you haven’t celebrated Christmas.

Love that Transforms:
Accepting the truth about God’s love for us.
… changes our love for ourselves.
… and provides both our source and our example to love others.
