Introduction: Today, we want to become more familiar with and to know the Lord God more that we might exult with Zechariah, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel.”

Context: Mary is pregnant. Elizabeth just has John the Baptist. Zechariah has confirmed the child's name is John and is freed from silence.

Luke 1:68

1. Blessed be “pings” several texts, including1 Kings 1:48 concerning David’s joy at seeing his son ascend the throne.

2‌. Zechariah calls the Lord blessed because of what God has set in motion: deliverance. (Psalm 62:1, 5-7, see below).

‌3. God is deliverer, sovereign, and fulfills his promises according to his word.

Psalm 62:1

Psalm 62:5-7

Luke 1:68-70

4. Raised Up and House of David brings to mind

‌5. Horn of Salvation is a symbol of might and or power (Ps. 132:17; Ez. 29:21)

‌6. Messiah is fulfillment of what was previously spoken.

Psalm 132:17

Ezekiel 29:21

Luke 1:71

1. Messiah will save from enemies, especially spiritual enemies.

‌2. All of us stand in need of mercy - we are all the bad guys. Jesus saves us from ourselves, sin, and death. We do not deserve any of it.

‌3. Conquering enemies implies the judgment of God. God is judge.

Luke 1:72-73

1. Promised rooted in past. Influenced by Mic. 7:20; original promise in
Gen. 22:16-17.

‌2. Messiah accomplishes multiplication of offspring through bringing in Jew and Gentile into the family of God.

‌3. Messiah accomplishes salvation by cross/grace through faith.

Micah 7:19-20

Genesis 22:16-17

Luke 1:74-75

1. Serve Him without fear. Serve means “serve/worship.” In the New Testament, it means “inner worship of the heart by faith” which leads to outward obedience and “service.” Example: Josh. 24:14

Joshua 24:14

Luke 1:76-77

1. Preparatory ministry pings: Is. 40:3 and Mal. 3:1.

‌2. Role of John to prepare for knowledge of salvation in forgiveness of sin by ministry of repentance. Pings. Ps. 130:7-8.

Isaiah 40:3

Malachi 3:1

Psalm 130:7-8

Luke 1:78-79

1. All of this due to the tender mercies of our God.

2. "Sunrise" "pings" Num. 24:17; Mal. 4:2; Is. 42:6.

3. The Messiah accomplishes these things; John prepares the way.

Numbers 24:17

Malachi 4:2

Isaiah 42:6

What does all this say about our glorious God? He is deliverer, he is promise-keeper, he is filled with tender mercies, he is judge, he is the one who loves us.

Let us take time to meditate on these characteristics of God, so that as we worship and obey him, we might draw nearer to the Lord of Heaven and Earth.
