Beyond Expectations

Beyond Expectations

This Sunday Pastor Jason Brooks will be bringing us the message in the first of our Christmas sermon series entitled Beyond Expectations. Jason says “This Sunday we kick off our theme of “Beyond expectations” in our run up to Christmas and the remembrance of the birth of Christ. I feel at times we often emphasise the deity of Christ and forget the importance that Jesus was born a baby, grew to be a toddler, a teenager, and a fully mature man. Christmas is a great opportunity to contemplate the birth, life, and death of Jesus and how this can help us in our own life journey. We really do have a God who has gone way beyond our expectations and has travelled the path before us and can empathise with our humanity.”

Luke 2:1-52

High Christology
A focus on the deity of Jesus
Low Christology
A focus on the humanity of Jesus
To emphasise and proclaim the deity of Jesus is very important. However, I wonder at times if we miss the humanity of Christ, and the example he set for us not only in His actions, but in the depth of His emotions. He walked the path before us and because of that He can empathize with our lives, our own weakness, and suffering yet also our joy and happiness.
• If you are weary Jesus empathizes with you
• If you are tired Jesus empathizes with you
• If you have been betrayed, Jesus empathizes with you
• If you have been hurt by another Jesus empathizes with you
• If you are suffering Jesus empathises with you

Philippians 4:12-13

Paul says he can do all things through Christ who strengthens him. I think that empowerment comes through Christ supernaturally. However, that strengthening can also come when we look back at the example Jesus set for us as He walked on earth and went to the cross.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me because Jesus walked the path and showed us what it means to love God
• in poverty
• in hunger
• in tiredness
• in anger
• in sadness
• in emotional distress
• in joy
• in faithfulness.
Jesus not only came to liberate us from our sin and reconcile us to God. He also came to show us how to live a full life embracing our humanity and reflecting God in this world.
