What is thankfulness?

Psalm 100:1–5 (NLT) - Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! 2Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. 3Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. 5For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation.
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 (ESV) - Rejoice always, 17pray without ceasing, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
What is distinctive about thankfulness as a Christ follower?

Only Christ followers authentically acknowledge God as the source of all things.
Colossians 1:11–14 (ESV) - being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Why is thankfulness so difficult?

Because, by sinful nature, we are prone to live selfish and discontented lives

Romans 1:21–22 (ESV) - For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
Why is thankfulness so important?

Thankfulness breeds contentment and godliness with contentment is great gain.

1 Timothy 6:6–8 (ESV) - But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.
Colossians 2:6–7 (ESV) - Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
