Dig Deeper:
1. What is one thing that stood out to you from this week’s message?
2. Reach Genesis 39:1-4. Can you recall a time when you have seen God’s favor in your life or in the life of someone you know?
3. Potiphar (prior to the interaction with his wife) trusted Joseph with great responsibilities and duties. Have you ever trusted someone in this way? If so, why did you trust them?
4. Read Genesis 39:8-9. What were the two main reasons Joseph provided when saying no to the proposition from Potiphar’s wife?
5. How can we be more conscious of God’s escape path for us when that particular temptation seeks to lure us into sin?
6. Read Genesis 37:26-28. How was Judah tempted to sin? How is Judah’s decision different from Joseph’s decision when being tempted?
7. Read Genesis 39:10. The interaction between Potiphar’s wife was not just a one-time occurrence. Joseph faced temptation on a daily basis. How did he respond to it? Knowing this, what does this say about Joseph’s character? What does it require of someone to develop such character?
8. How important is to run from temptation? Why?
9. Read Psalm 119:9-11, Romans 6:11-14, and 1 Corinthians 10:12-13. How do these passages provide insight for us into building godly character in the face of temptation?
10. Read Genesis 39:19-20. Did Joseph’s fleeing improve his situation?
11. How does the idea of “if I do the right things, good things should happen to me” line up with this text (and the entirety of the Bible)?
12. Why do you think God allowed the situation with Potiphar’s wife to end the way it did (especially in light of God’s favor in the other areas of his life)?
13. How do you think the dreams God gave to Joseph encouraged him during his time as a slave in Egypt?
14. Even when we are faithful serving God, and others, life can change in an instant. When we experience these challenges, how can we respond?
15. Does “being righteous” mean that you will not be persecuted or face difficult times in your life? Explain.
16. How does Joseph’s story show us how we should handle pressure when asked to do the wrong thing?

Live It Out:

What story do you want to tell?

Life is filled with unexpected difficulties. When things go wrong, we can often find ourselves in a vulnerable position where we can be tempted to make decisions that will derail us from God’s plans for our life. In moments of struggle and temptation, we have no idea what truly hangs in the balance. What do you want to be able to say about how you endured, how you responded to temptation, how you held onto God’s promises in the most difficult times? Imagine the incredible things we can do for God as we overcome temptation and choose to hold tightly to God’s promises.

1. What is tempting you to turn your eyes from God’s blessing? What can you do to follow in the steps of Joseph rather than fall into the trap of Judah?
2. How can you specifically follow Joseph’s example to run from temptation?
3. Is there anything in your life that you need to flee, but fear that in doing so your obedience may bring about greater difficulty?
4. What is one lesson have you learned from Joseph’s life that you can apply to your life? How will you live it out this week?
