The Parable of the Soils [Sunday, November 20, 2022] Greg Burlile
Jesus Tells the Parable to the Crowd
Some things to note about the Parable:

1: Nothing is said about the sower and his skill to sow the seed - the was no difference in how the sower sowed the seed.

2: Nothing is said about the quality of the seed - it all comes from the same source. The seed that bears fruit is the very same kinds of seed that is choked out.

3: The lesson in this parable is all about the soil

Jesus Explains the Parable to His Disciples
The Keys to the Parable

* The seed represents God’s Word. Mostly like here is the gospel message.

* The sower is anyone who disperses the Word of God or the gospel message.

* The soil is the human heart

The Parable is about 4 different kinds of heart responses to the message of salvation
Heart Response #1: The Hard Heart

13:4 ESV And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them.

13:19 ESV When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path.
Heart Response #2: The Superficial Heart

13:5 ESV Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil,

13:20-21 ESV
20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy,
21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.
Heart Response #3: The Divided Heart

13:7 ESV Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them

13:22 ESV As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.
Heart Response #4: The Fruitful Heart

13:8 ESV Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

13:23 ESV As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”
