Isaiah 40:12-26
“Seeing God”
Introduction
1. Isaiah 39:6 prophesies that one day Judah would be over run by Babylon. 120 years later it
happened. God keeps His word!
2. “There is no God.” Penn Jillette (Penn and Teller). This is typical of what we have been
bombarded with in the past 50-60 years. They are looking at things through their own eyes.
3. Many churches today: They say the right thing, but deep inside they really don’t believe
anymore.”
4. This was the situation in Isaiah 40:12-26. Are you looking at things through your own eyes?
5. Is. 40:12-26 Let’s see God through God’s eyes. It changes how we see everything else.

I. GOD’S GREATNESS 40:12-17
A. He Is Greater Than Nature 12-14
1. The Exactness of God 12
*Penn: “She needs to search for some objective evidence of supernatural power.”
*Who? Cause and effect is implied. Something cannot come from nothing. The
Creator must be greater than the creation.
*Measured…Marked…Calculated…Weighed (NASV)
*How Is It Possible To Believe In God? “I find it easier to believe in God than to
believe that Hamlet was deduced from the molecular structure of a mutton chop.”

2. The Enlightenment of God 13
*Who…Direct…Counsel…Taught The Teacher must be superior/greater than His
pupil.
*The Holy Spirit was the executive of God in creation. In the beginning God
created the heavens and the earth. Every popular theory of the origin of the earth
is set aside.
3. The Education of God 14
*With Whom…Who There is an intelligent Designer.
*Counsel…Instructed…Taught…Showed him the way of understanding…The
Teacher must be superior/greater than His pupil. He moves from the Greater to
the lesser and implies a lack that must be supplied outside himself by Another.
*Does God Exist Marilyn Adamson (a former atheist): 1) The complexity of our
planet… 2) The human brain’s complexity shows a higher intelligence behind it.
3) Chance or natural causes are insufficient explanations.
B. He Is Greater Than Nations 15-17
1. Nations Are Infinitesimal 15
*Babylon…Assyria was the Biggest most powerful thing known to Israel.
*3 times Isaiah uses the word like or as to describe…the USA…China…Russia…
India…Brazil.
*Drop in a bucket…fine dust on a scale (no effect to weight) Isles…coastland which
is land mass or parts of the world in general. He moves them as easily as a particle
of dust!
2. Nations Are Insufficient 16
*Lebanon was known for cedar. If all of Lebanon became a fire and all its livestock
a burnt offering…
*It would not be sufficient. No animal sacrifice can possibly be adequate enough
to be worthy of such a mighty and majestic God. Only One sacrifice was worthy.
*Does God Exist: 4)To state with certainty that there is no God, a person has to
ignore the passion of an enormously vast number of people who are convinced that
there is a God. 5) We know God exists because He pursues us. 6) Unlike any other
revelation of God, Jesus Christ is the clearest, most specific picture of God pursuing
us.
3. Nations Are Insignificant 17
*Human kind Before Him in relation to and comparison to what He is??
*Nothing…Less Than Nothing…Meaningless…Vanity.
Are you looking at things through your own eyes? Let’s see God through God’s eyes.
II. GOD’S GLORY 40:18-26
A. His Glory Diminished 18-20
To whom will you liken God? Man loves to diminish God to his own size. What
likeness will you compare Him unto?
1. He Doesn’t Fit 18
*No analogy is adequate: Like…a lion…fountain…tower…husband…father…
Shield…high tower…None can say it all!
*When we see God through God’s eyes He doesn’t fit into any box of created size.
He goes beyond our categories of experience and therefore deserves our trust.
2. He Doesn’t Form 19-20
*A.W. Tozer: Let us beware lest we in our pride accept the erroneous notion that
idolatry consists only in kneeling before visible objects of adoration, and that
civilized people are therefore free from it. The essence of idolatry is the
entertainment of thoughts about God that are unworthy of Him. Knowledge of the
Holy
*Man can only make God smaller to fit their concept of God. Either we worship the
true and living God or we will worship gods of our own design, but we will
worship! Whether rich (19) or poor (20).
B. His Glory Displayed 21-26
It is not a lack of information…known…heard…told…understood. There is a
God-shaped emptiness on the inside of everyone. When we know to be true doesn’t
always impact us. From the foundations of the earth…with the wrong perspective to
come to the wrong conclusion.
1. His Sovereignty 21-24
*It is He…God is at work in the world today. It is He who raises leaders up and
brings them down according to His purpose and for His glory.
*The power brokers are to God like little seedlings, scarcely planted. God merely
blows on them with zero effort on His part driving them to oblivion.
2. His Strength 25-26
*To whom then will you liken Me? Or Where is My equal?
*Look up at the stars. I believe that it is as likely that there should be a man without
a country, as a world without a Creator.” Wm Buckley
*Look up…the sun is our closest star. The next is 4.5 light years away. Light travels
at 186,282 miles per second. The sun generates energy with the same
explosiveness as a hydrogen bomb, its own continuous nuclear fission. The sun’s
surface is relatively cool (10,000 degrees Fahrenheit). The center 27,000,000
degrees. The diameter is 870,000 miles and would hold 1,000,000 earths.
*Our solar system is inside a galaxy called the Milky Way and is 104,000 light
years across. There may be over 100 billion galaxies in the universe.
*So What? God wants us to know something about Himself. The One who brings
the stars out at night cares about you and me.
This God keeps His promises...TRUST ME!
You either have a BIG problem and a little God or you have a little problem and a BIG God!
See God through God’s eyes...it changes how you see everything else!
