1 Timothy 6:6-9a, 11-12, 17-19
Godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.
But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare… But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

Why we take the Lord's Supper
Because Jesus told us to
Because we are receiving spiritual nourishment
Because we are participating in the Lord’s Death
Because we are strengthening our unity with each other
Because we are looking forward
“How then, should we regard the Lord’s Supper? We should look forward to the Lord’s Supper as a time of relationship and communion with Christ, for he has promised to meet with us. We should think of the sacrament not so much in terms of Christ’s presence as in terms of his promise and the potential for a closer relationship with him. We also need to be careful to avoid the neo-orthodox conception that for the true communicant the Lord’s Supper is a subjective encounter with Christ. He is objectively present. The Spirit is capable of making him real in our experience and has promised to do so. The Lord’s Supper, then, is a time when we are drawn close to Christ, and thus come to know him better and love him more." —Millard Erickson

New City Catechism | Q46: What is the Lord’s Supper?
Answer: Christ commanded all Christians to eat bread and to drink from the cup in thankful remembrance of him and his death. The Lord’s Supper is a celebration of the presence of God in our midst; bringing us into communion with God and with one another; feeding and nourishing our souls. It also anticipates the day when we will eat and drink with Christ in his Father’s kingdom.
http://newcitycatechism.com/new-city-catechism/#46New City Catechism | Q47: Does the Lord’s Supper add anything to Christ’s atoning work?
Answer: No, Christ died once for all. The Lord’s Supper is a covenant meal celebrating Christ’s atoning work; as it is also a means of strengthening our faith as we look to him, and a foretaste of the future feast. But those who take part with unrepentant hearts eat and drink judgment on themselves.
