Prayer Requests:
Group Discussion: Who’s orders have you found it most difficult to obey; a military officer, an athletic coach, a teacher, a parent, or someone else?
Read out loud: Luke 19:45 - 20:8
If I accept the authority of Jesus I will:
#1. Be His subject. The religious leaders won’t pronounce Jesus King and follow Him. Notice how the leaders are feeling their authority slip away and that’s what motivates them to ask Jesus, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority?” Why do you think the people are no longer listening to the religious leaders in Jerusalem, is it mostly because of their: (Pick one of them and explain) 1. Hypocrisy 2. Poor modeling 3. Bad attitudes 4. Lack of compassion 5. Greed 6. Arrogance? Is there an issue or area in your life over which you need to pronounce Jesus King and follow Him in a more dedicated way? If you have kids what issue or area would you like them to follow Jesus in a greater way?
#2. Apply His word. Which command of Jesus in the Bible would you like to apply better every day: 1. Love your neighbor 2. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you 3. And if your brother sins against you 7 times a day and returns to you 7 times saying, “I repent, forgive him.” 4. Store up for your selves treasures in heaven. 5. Do not be anxious. 6. Do not judge.
If you’re going to apply God’s Word to your life you have to remember it at the right time. So how often do you memorize scripture or reread a scripture that you could draw strength from?
#3. Welcome outsiders. Take out your Oikos card and write down a couple of names of people for whom you could pray hoping that eventually they’ll accept an invitation to attend GateWay. Take some time to pray right now for your friends or relatives.
Family Time: Read Luke 20:1-8 to your kids. Ask them why Jesus wouldn’t answer the question the Chief Priests asked. Explain that Jesus had answered their question by teaching, performing miracles like healing diseases, calming storms, and being the Good Shepherd by serving and loving. Use yourself as a mom or dad to illustrate the point. “You know I’m your mom/dad because I: teach you, take you to the doctor, serve you by… love you by….” Jesus demonstrated who He was just as much as told them who He was, but there came a point where He stopped telling them because they wanted to destroy Him.
