Dig Deeper:
1. Have you ever participated in a mission or had a major goal to accomplish in your life? Is planning or forethought important to a mission or goal? If so, why?
2. The church is a movement gathered around the mission of Jesus. How easy is it to move away from the original mission of a church over time?
3. Read Matthew 28:18. What is the significance of Jesus telling the disciples that “all authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth” before He tells them to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations”?
4. Because Jesus is alive, anything is possible. How does this knowledge allow us to be full of hope and be bold witnesses?
5. Knowing that Jesus gave us only one mission (to make disciples), does that change how you view your life and your role as a Christ follower? If so, how?
6. Baptism is publicly professing your faith in Jesus Christ. If you have been baptized, describe the event and how you fell professing your faith publicly. What would hold a person back from taking this next step?
7. Read Matthew 28:20a. What does Jesus say to teach others? The word observe means to “see or notice,” but it also means to “abide by, keep, and obey.” How can we all follow what Jesus has commanded us?
8. Read Matthew 28:20b. Why do we lose sight of this promise so easily?
9. Read John 14:26. Do you ever feel like you aren’t equipped to share with others about Jesus? Does knowing that the Holy Spirit makes you capable, and that our job is simply to be available, change your perspective? How can we make sure we are relying on the Holy Spirit to guide us instead of trying to do it on our own?
10. Do you ever feel like you have to go to a foreign country or a specific place to find people who don’t know Jesus? If so, why? How does knowing that there are people in our own neighborhoods and community that don’t know Jesus change your perspective? How can we help people find and follow Jesus both here AND around the world?
11. A disciple is a follower of Jesus who is being changed by Jesus and is committed to the mission of Jesus. If you are one of Christ’s disciples, share how you are currently being changed by Jesus and what you are doing to stay committed to the mission of Jesus.
12. Read Matthew 28:19-20. Identify the verbs Jesus used in this sentence to determine how we are to make disciples.
13. “Go” literally means “as you are going.” Where do you “go” regularly throughout your week? Who might you encounter as you “go”? As you “go,” how can you represent Christ in word and deed?
14. We support global missions through praying, giving, and going. Even though we all cannot “go” to other places, what specifically can we do to support reaching all nations?
15. How can we lay aside our preferences and submit our lives to the mission of God? Discuss an instance in your life when you’ve done that. Identify areas where you can begin, or continue, to encourage others to follow Jesus.
16. The Great Commission is the life mission of every Christ-follower. Disciple making isn't just the responsibility of a pastor or something only missionaries do in far off lands. It's for every person who is a follower of Jesus. Based on what you've heard, read, and discussed, how can you personally fulfill Christ's Commission in your day-to-day life and experience life in God's kingdom here and now?
