Assyrians - 10 Tribes
Babylonians - 2 Tribes
70 Years later - Medes and the Persians came / King Cyrus // set Israel free
Cyrus allows people to go back to their country of origin — they would pay taxes to them…However, they would even help fund it.
Zechariah 1:1 NIV
In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo:

Haggai 1:1 NIV
In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai ….
Two prophets, same audience:
Zechariah 1, Ezra 5:1-2, 6:14, James 4:7-10, Romans 10:16-21

Haggai: God’s concern for his house.
God’s plan “A” is the church // make sure my house is built!

Zechariah: God’s concern for our hearts.
God doesn’t only want his house built…he wants our heart’s restored.

Haggai — temple of God
Zechariah — temple of our hearts

God wants to renew his vows with his bride // his people.

Zechariah 1:2-6 NIV
“The Lord was very angry with your ancestors. Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: 'Return to me,' declares the Lord Almighty, 'and I will return to you,' says the Lord Almighty. Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: 'Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.' But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the Lord.
Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever? But did not my words and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors? “Then they repented and said, 'The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve, just as he determined to do.' ”
Two Truths Concerning God’s Will:

1. We can’t know the will of God without knowing the Word of God.

2. We can’t be in the will of God without obeying the Word of God.
It’s not enough to know the will of God…must live the word of God
God’s word —

we have often made the word of God rational…than relational
Where you are in Christ is more important that where you are in the world!
A picture that’s worth a thousand words:

1. Satan sees our sin and accuses us.

Zechariah 3:1-2 NIV
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?”

2. God sees our sin and chooses us.

Zechariah 3:4-5 NIV
The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.” Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you.” Then I said, “Put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of the Lord stood by.

3. It is only grace and mercy that gives us access to God.

Zechariah 3:6-7 NIV
The angel of the Lord gave this charge to Joshua: “This is what the Lord Almighty says: 'If you will walk in obedience to me and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here.'
God’s thoughts on religion:

1. Being religious can’t erase our past sins.

Zechariah 7:4-6 NIV
Then the word of the Lord Almighty came to me: “Ask all the people of the land and the priests, 'When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months for the past seventy years, was it really for me that you fasted? And when you were eating and drinking, were you not just feasting for yourselves?

2. Being religious can’t erase our current sins.

Zechariah 7:9-10 NIV
“This is what the Lord Almighty said: 'Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.'

3. So, instead of getting religious, get right with God.
Beware of the progression of rejecting God

Zechariah 7:11-12 NIV
“But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly they turned their backs and covered their ears. They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the Lord Almighty was very angry.

1. Refusing
2. Turned their back (justification)
3. Covered there ears
4. Hardening of their hearts
