To Tell The Truth [Sunday, September 4, 2022] Greg Burlile

Exodus 20:16

Exodus 20:16 ESV
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Deuteronomy 17:6 ESV
On the testimony of two or three witnesses a person is to be put to death, but no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.

Deuteronomy 19:16-19 ESV
If a malicious witness arises to accuse a person of wrongdoing, then both parties to the dispute shall appear before the Lord, before the priests and the judges who are in office in those days. The judges shall inquire diligently, and if the witness is a false witness and has accused his brother falsely, then you shall do to him as he had meant to do to his brother. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

Zechariah 8:16 ESV These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace;

Leviticus 19:15 ESV You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.

Proverbs 14:5, 25 A faithful witness does not lie,
but a false witness breathes out lies. A truthful witness saves lives,
but one who breathes out lies is deceitful.
1: Telling the Truth is Important Because the Very Nature of God is Truth

Numbers 23:9 ESV
God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

Romans 3:4 ESV
Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written:
“So that you may be proved right when you speak
and prevail when you judge.

John 14:6 ESV
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
2: Telling the Truth is Important Because the Devil is a Liar

John 8:44 ESV
You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Genesis 3:1 ESV
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

Revelation 12:9 ESV
And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

Colossians 3:8-10 ESV
8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self[d] with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
3: Be Committed to Telling the Truth

A) Never give false testimony in court

B) Don’t twist words to your benefit or someone else’s detriment

C) Do not gossip

D) Don’t make promises you can’t keep

Ecclesiastes 5:5 ESV
It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.

E) Guard your neighbor’s reputation

Proverbs 22:1
A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
and favor is better than silver or gold.
4: Being known as person who values the truth will help you be a good witness for Christ

Acts 1:8 ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Jeremiah 14:14 ESV
14 And the Lord said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.

Romans 1:24-25 ESV
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
