Revelation 5: The backstory as to why there will be a seven year tribulation period in the last days

Heaven is a real place

John 14:2
My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? NIV

Philippians 3:20
Our citizenship is in heaven. NIV

Philippians 1:21
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. NIV

The devil doesn’t want you to know about heaven or get excited about it

Revelation 5:1
Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. NIV

The scroll in God’s right hand has something to do with the earth and its inhabitants

The scroll represents the ancient title deed or property deed
Someone related to you who was willing and able to pay the price had the right to buy back land that was lost or forfeited

Ga’al: kinsman redeemer

Book of Ruth (story of a kinsman redeemer)

Jeremiah 32

As a statement of faith, God tells Jeremiah to buy then land (get the title deed)

Jeremiah 32:14
This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Take both this sealed deed and the unsealed copy, and put them into a pottery jar to preserve them for a long time.’ 15 For this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Someday people will again own property here in this land and will buy and sell houses and vineyards and fields.’ NLT

Many scholars believe the scroll in Revelation 5 is the title deed to the earth

Romans 5:12
When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. NLT

Romans Chapter 8:20
All creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, 21 the
creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. 22 For we know that all creation has been groaning (wanting to be delivered) as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. NLT

The devil called the ruler of this world (John 12:31).

The devil called the god of this age (2 Corinthians 4:4)

1 John 5:19 The whole world is under the control of the evil one.

Luke 4:6
“I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to anyone I please.” NLT

Revelation: 5:2
I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” NIV

Revelation 5:3 And no one in Heaven or on Earth or under the Earth was able to open the
scroll or to look at it.

Revelation 5:4 I wept and wept.

Revelation 5:5
Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” NIV

Heaven is a redemptive place

Lion of the tribe of Judah. (A reference to Genesis 49:9 where the Tribe of Judah is described as a lion)

Root of David (a reference to Isaiah Chapter 11:1)

Revelation 5:6
Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. NIV

When Jesus came the first time, he came as a lamb

John 1:29
Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

When Jesus returns (Revelation 19), he will return as a lion

Seven: Complete; completion; the fullness of something

The lamb is omnipotent, complete, the fullness of all there is. He is all powerful and has all authority

Will the marks of the crucifixion on Jesus be the only work of humanity in Heaven?

John 1:14
The word became flesh and lived among us. NASB J

John 10:11
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices (lays down) his life for the sheep.18 No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. NLT

Romans 5:6
When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. NLT

Revelation 5:9
With your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and
language and people and nation. NIV

The scroll (title deed of the earth) contains the record of judgements that will fall upon the earth before the second coming of Jesus

Revelation 5:8
And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. 9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased (redeemed) for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. NIV

Revelation 5:12
Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” NIV

Revelation 5:13
Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!” NIV
