#23 Spiritual House Cleaning 8.21.22

1 John 2:1-2 NASB My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 John 3:1-3 NASB See how great a love the Father has given us, that we would be called children of God; and in fact we are. For this reason the world does not know us: because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope set on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Four Concepts of a Clean Life

I. Clean inside and out

A. Sins of the flesh and sins of the spirit

B. 1 Corinthians 7:1 NKJV Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

C. Isaiah 53:5 NKJV “He was wounded for our transgressions; He was bruised for our iniquities”

II. Clean by the continual washing of the Blood

A. 1 John 1:7 NASB But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

B. A continual state of cleansing

C. Saved by grace; kept by grace

III. Clean by constant communion

A. John 13:1-10

B. This speaks of His Presence, or our devotional life.
IV. Clean by the witness of The Spirit

A. Romans 8:1-2 NASB Therefore there is now no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

B. Two sources

1. Condemnation (accusation from the enemy)

a. Offers no hope - but produces shame, guilt, and hopelessness.

b. It brings a sense of defilement.

c. Is generally vague and non-specific, even when accusation is part of it.

d. Gives no hope of redemption or recovery.

e. “Never believe the devil, even when he tells the truth.” — Puritan writers

2. Conviction (correction from The Lord)

a. Is specific and redemptive.

b. Covers the sin with hope and the promise of cleansing.

c. Is usually very specific and helps us understand our sin and why it is wrong.

d. It covers everything with a sense of hope!

Christian Life Lessons

1. Conscience is another instrument of correction, a lesser process, but is valuable for us nonetheless.

2. No Christian discipline I know of is more helpful than a consistent devotional life that brings us into the Presence of The Lord.

3. One of the greatest liberators in our Christian walk is the freedom to dwell in the Presence of God knowing we are welcome to approach with confidence.
