In this portion of God’s Word, Joshua has a big task ahead of him. He has to lead the Israelites to overtake Jericho. God gives him some counterintuitive instructions on how to lead the Israelites to accomplish this. By taking a look at this story, we can learn how we can tackle the strongholds in our lives.

1. Decide to submit to Christ
Joshua 5:13-15, James 4:7, Luke 22:42, 1 Peter 5:6

2. Align yourself with God’s Word
Joshua 6:1-11, 2 Tim. 3:16, Heb. 4:12, Matt. 4:4, Ps. 119:105

3. Remain steadfast over time
Joshua 6:12-16, Rom. 12:12, Gal. 6:9, 1 Cor. 15:58, James 1:12, Titus 2:2

4. Remember God’s plan for salvation
Joshua 6:17, 22-25, John 3:16-18, Rom. 10:9, Acts 4:12

5. Rely on God’s power over your own
Joshua 6:20-21, Phil. 4:13, 2 Cor. 12:9, Is. 41:10, Prov. 3:5, Ps. 28:7

6. Realize God can redeem any situation
Joshua 6:18-19, 24, Eph. 1:7, Col. 1:14, Tit. 2:14, Col. 1:19-20

7. Refuse to turn back
Joshua 6:26-27, Prov. 26:11, 2 Pet. 2:20-22, Rom. 8:13
Reflection Questions

1. Jericho was a stronghold. It would have been extremely well guarded and difficult to overtake. Take some time and jot down some examples of strongholds and sins that people struggle with today.

2. Go back to your answers from question 1 and circle the strongholds and sins that you struggle with.

3. Read Joshua 6:2. It was clear that God had a plan for the Israelites to overtake the city completely. All they had to do was follow God’s plan, and they did! This led them to overtaking the city completely. Now read 1 John 5:1-5. In the same way He gave a plan to the Israelites to overcome Jericho, God has given us a plan to overcome the strongholds that sin has in our lives. Of the 7 points from this story in Joshua, which ones do you most need to work on and why?

4. What is your biggest take away about how this passage affects your life? What do you need to work on? Who can you share this with and ask you to keep you accountable to accomplishing this?
