Honor Your Father and Mother [Sunday, August 7, 2022] Greg Burlile
1: The WHAT - Honor Your Father and Mother

Proverbs 6:20 ESV
My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching.

Leviticus 19:3 ESV
Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.
2: The WHY - You will experience an abundant life

Exodus 20:12 ESV
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

*Proverbs 3:1-2 ESV
Colossians 3:20 ESV

It pleases God when we obey and honor our parents

Ephesians 6:1 ESV

Government
1 Peter 2:13-14, 17 ESV
13 Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.
17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

Romans 13:1 ESV
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

Your Boss
Ephesians 6:5,8
5 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ,
8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free.

Church Leaders
Hebrews 13:17 ESV
17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
3: The HOW - Practical ways to follow this command

As a young child
Speaking respectfully to your parents
Obey your parents when they ask you to do something
Try and do what they ask with a good attitude

As a teen

Listen to their warnings regarding your friends
Talk to your parents and let them know what is happening

As a young adult
Seek your mother and father’s advice as you make education and career decisions. Get their counsel regarding serious relationships and marriage.

As an adult child …living out on your own
Make your parents a priority (call them, text them, take time to be with them)
Help care for them as much as you can as they get older
Help provide for them

** Honor Your Parents by Extending grace and forgiveness to them
