Docetism comes from the Greek word, “to seem.” They believed “flesh” (or our bodies) were evil or worldly; Therefore, Jesus could not have had a body.
In our efforts to stress the deity of Christ, we must never overlook the humanity of Christ.
Outline:
1) The incarnate Christ grows (vv. 39-40)
2) The incarnate Christ with worried parents (vv. 41-45)
3) The incarnate Christ human, yet amazing (vv. 46-48a)
4) The incarnate Christ and His mission (vv. 48b-52)
By putting on human flesh, Jesus humbled Himself so that you might be exalted with Him.
Though Jesus was fully human, He was without sin.
“Jesus is the true and better Adam who passed the test in the garden and whose obedience is imputed to us. Jesus is the true and better Abraham who answered the call of God to leave all the comfortable and familiar and go out into the void. Jesus is the true and better David whose victory becomes his people’s victory, though they never lifted a stone to accomplish it themselves.”
~Tim Keller
Jesus put on human flesh so that He could be our great example.
Jesus puts on human flesh to complete the mission His father had sent Him on.
Without Jesus’ humanity, we do not have a Savior.
The Word became flesh, so that God could fulfill His promise to save His people and dwell with them.
The Word became flesh so that He could be our true Mediator.
The Word became flesh so He could suffer and die.
