Baptisms
Sundays, August 7 & 14 | When God changes your life, it's worth celebrating! We're so excited for the baptisms coming up in August. Get in touch with Pastor Ken (kbushey@mantenonazarene.org) to go public with your faith or celebrate what God's been up to in your life!

New Student Ministries Pastor
If you've somehow missed it, we are so excited to have our new Student Ministries Pastor, Marcus Cleveland, and his wonderful family joining us here at Manteno Nazarene! Marcus has experience in student ministries with his most recent assignment being in Bicknell, IL. His wife, Casey, works as an oncologist. They have three awesome young sons; Arthur, Gus, and Finn. We want to give a warm welcome to Marcus and his amazing family as they arrive August 8. Our plan is twofold - we want to give them gift cards as they move in and we want to give them local knowledge. You know, the kinda stuff you ask your neighbor when you move in; dog groomers, best places to ride your bike, the coolest play park and splash pad, who has the best chimichangas, who to call when it's 10pm and your basement is flooding, which dmv to go to, and of course - who has the best pizza. Please pick up a card in the lobby or bring one from home, and drop it in the basket in the lobby.

Griefshare
Saturdays | Starting August 20 | 10am | GriefShare, a special help seminar and support group for people experiencing grief and loss, is starting back up again on August 20. This round, they are meeting on Saturday mornings. It is a 13-week cycle that you can join at any time. Contact Pat Bialecke, 815-353-5804 for more information.

MOPS & MOMSnext
Our local MOPS Group, is starting their 2022-2023 meeting year. They meet 2 times a month on Fridays, 9am - 11am, (please check the calendar for dates) in the upstairs Children's Center. It is a time of togetherness for moms of preschool-aged children. Each meeting they have a special emphasis with projects, special speakers, and sharing the word of God. Children are well cared for by background-approved workers. Children have crafts, snacks, playtime, and Bible stories. MOPS will be having an open house on Friday, August 19 from 9:30-10:30am. They invite you to join them and bring a friend. Their first actual meeting will be on August 26, from 9-11am. For more information and to contact a group member - use https://www.mops.org/groups/manteno. We also have a local MOMSnext group, which is geared towards mothers of kids in school. They meet every other Tuesday night at 7pm. There is no childcare provided as this is a much-deserved night out for moms. Again, the best way to get more information is https://www.mops.org/groups/momsnextmanteno

Promotion Sunday
August 14 | School is starting soon and as of August 14 for our church, your child is officially in their rising grade. So - children entering Kindergarten will be promoted to upstairs K-4 Children’s Church. Students entering fifth grade are now officially in the teen group. They will stay in the Sunday service and attend youth group on Wednesday evenings. (If you are wondering - the prek switch on their birthdays.)

Pregnancy Resource Center
If you would like to donate to the Pregnancy Resource Center, we have baby bottles to fill with change available at the welcome center. Please return them to the church by September 1.

Amazon Smile and Kroger Community Rewards

With Amazon Smile, we have earned around $500 so far, with very minimal effort on our end. With both of these programs, you just have to choose the nonprofit you want to support. Battle Belongs

Verse 1
When all I see is the battle
You see my victory
When all I see is a mountain
You see a mountain moved
And as I walk through the shadow
Your love surrounds me
There's nothing to fear now
For I am safe with You

Chorus
So when I fight I'll fight on my knees
With my hands lifted high
O God the battle belongs to You
And every fear I lay at Your feet
I'll sing through the night
O God the battle belongs to You

Verse 2
And if You are for me
Who can be against me
For Jesus there's nothing
Impossible for You
When all I see are the ashes
You see the beauty
When all I see is a cross
God You see the empty tomb

Bridge
(An) Almighty Fortress You go before us
Nothing can stand against
The power of our God
You shine in the shadows
You win every battle
Nothing can stand against
The power of our God

O God Our Help In Ages Past (St. Anne)

Verse 1
O God our help in ages past
Our hope for years to come
Our shelter from the stormy blast
And our eternal home

Verse 2
Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure
Sufficient is Thine arm alone
And our defense is sure

Verse 3
Before the hills in order stood
Or earth received her frame
From everlasting Thou art God
To endless years the same

Verse 4
Thy Word commands our flesh to dust
Return ye sons of men
All nations rose from earth at first
And turn to earth again

Verse 5
A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun

Verse 6
The busy tribes of flesh and blood
With all their lives and cares
Are carried downwards by the flood
And lost in following years

Verse 7
Time like an ever rolling stream
Bears all its sons away
They fly forgotten as a dream
Dies at the op'ning day

Verse 8
Like flowery fields the nations stand
Pleased with the morning light
The flowers beneath the mower's hand
Lie withering ere 'tis night

Verse 9
Our God our help in ages past
Our hope for years to come
Be Thou our guard while troubles last
And our eternal home

Whom Shall I Fear God Of Angel Armies

Verse 1
You hear me when I call
You are my morning song
Though darkness fills the night
It cannot hide the light
Whom shall I fear
You crush the enemy underneath my feet
You are my sword and shield
Though troubles linger still
Whom shall I fear

Chorus
I know Who goes before me
I know Who stands behind
The God of angel armies is always by my side
The One who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies is always by my side

Verse 2
My strength is in Your name
For You alone can save
You will deliver me
Yours is the victory
Whom shall I fear
Whom shall I fear
(Whom shall I fear)

Bridge
(And) nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in Your hands
I'm holding on to Your promises
You are faithful
You are faithful

Build My Life

Verse 1
Worthy of ev'ry song we could ever sing
Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
Worthy of ev'ry breath we could ever breathe
We live for You

Verse 2
Jesus the name above ev'ry other name
Jesus the only one who could ever save
Worthy of ev'ry breath we could ever breathe
We live for You
We live for You

Chorus
Holy there is no one like You
There is none beside You
Open up my eyes in wonder and show me who You are
And fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love to those around me

Bridge
I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken

Sermon Notes

Forward Thinking: When Evil Desires to Have Us
Genesis 14:1-16
July 31, 2022

Genesis 12:4
So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him.

Genesis 13:10-13
Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)

Genesis 13:10-13
So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east.

Genesis 13:10-13
The two men parted company: Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.

Genesis 13:18
So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.

Genesis 14:11-12
The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.

Genesis 14:14-16
When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan. During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus. He recovered all the goods and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.

Matthew 16:18
I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

Stronger

Verse 1
There is Love that came for us
Humbled to a sinner's cross
You broke my shame and sinfulness
You rose again victorious

Verse 2
Faithfulness none can deny
Through the storm and through the fire
There is truth that sets me free
Jesus Christ who lives in me

Chorus
You are stronger
You are stronger
Sin is broken
You have saved me
It is written
Christ is risen
Jesus You are Lord of all

Verse 3
No beginning and no end
You're my hope and my defence
You came to seek and save the lost
You paid it all upon the cross

Bridge
So let Your Name be lifted higher
Be lifted higher
Be lifted higher
(REPEAT 4X)
