You can't judge what is happening in other people's hearts, only in yours.
It's far easier to celebrate prophets, and Jesus, safely from a distance.
God continues to send us prophets, sages and teachers.

Sages are those who provide practical and Godly wisdom
Teachers give frameworks that help people interpret reality for themselves

Abel was the first righteous person killed (Gen 4:8) and Zechariah was the last in the Hebrew Bible ( 2 Chr 24:20 – 21) so Jesus is saying that the whole of redemptive history is coming to a head in this generation who will kill the ultimate innocent person.
Jesus expresses his love for the Jewish people and his grief at their choice to turn away. He is speaking as their Messiah.
Jesus is coming back, and there is no better news.
