Honoring God’s Name [Sunday, July 24, 2022] Greg Burlile
What is this commandment forbidding?

Common ways of interpreting and applying this command are …

** Don’t blaspheme or curse God’s name

Leviticus 24:16 ESV
16 Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him. The sojourner as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.

** Don’t make an empty or false oath swearing by God’s name

Leviticus 19:12 ESV
You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.

** Don’t proclaim false visions or falsely claim to speak for God

Jeremiah 23:25 ESV
25 I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’
** What God is commanding in Exodus 20:7 is broader than these specific applications

Look at the commandment more closely...

Take = take up or carry

God’s Name = YHWH (I am who I am) is not just a name it communicates who He is.

In Vain = empty …to no effect ..something done in vain…means it was ineffective

Exodus 19:4-6 ESV
1 Peter 2:9-10 ESV
Numbers 6:22-27 ESV
Exodus 28:29 ESV

In Exodus 28:29, That word BEAR is the same word used for TAKE in our 3rd commandment…Aaron the priest was to take up or carry the names of the sons of Israel on his breast piece that he wore.

** As followers of Jesus and royal priesthood….we take up and carry the name of God wherever we go…

** The question is do we do in vain…do we carry it to no effect.

Do we represent God accurately and honorably as we go about our days?
Do we bring honor or dishonor to Him?
