WALKING FREE…BEING YOU THROUGH HIM
Romans 7:15-25
You just got to be you! Walking free is not about “copying” someone else.
Christlikeness is not produced by imitation, but by inhabitation (R. Warren). He who began a good work in you will see it to completion. This is about learning how to be you through Him!
How do we do that? It’s not easy because we still have a sinful nature dwelling in us that is conflict with the Spirit. It’s a struggle, and sometimes perplexing.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do (Rom. 7:15).
And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good (Rom. 7:16).
As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me (Rom. 7:17).
For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out (Rom. 7:18).
For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do – this I keep on doing (Rom. 7:19).
Now if I do what do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it (Rom. 7:20).
So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me (Rom. 7:21)
For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me (Rom. 7:22-23).
Why does sin “wage war?” Because it’s lost control. It’s also why this life is a spiritual battle. A winning strategy is going to be “I can’t”, but wholeheartedly trust HE can.
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? (Rom. 7:24). There is no what that will rescue you. It’s about a WHO!
Thanks be to God who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! (Rom. 7:25).
How do you live through Jesus? It’s about becoming immersed in a personal relationship with Him, and His kingdom. It’s about putting all your pressure, all your weight, all your broken dreams, past disappointments, and unhealed wounds on His shoulders. Connect everything you are to Him.
Do not offer ANY PART of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer EVERY PART of yourself to Him as an instrument of righteousness (Rom. 6:13).
