Dig Deeper:
1. What does it mean to be chosen? Describe a time when you have been chosen to accomplish something. How did that make you feel?
2. First Peter is written to a church that was in constant persecution. Why was it so important for them to be reminded that they were chosen?
3. Have you ever built something? Was it difficult or easy? What material items did it take to build it? How long did it take?
4. Read 1 Peter 2:1. How are malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander considered childish behaviors? Describe a time in your childhood when you, or someone you know, acted out in one of these ways.
5. Consider and discuss how these five behaviors can be played out in subtle ways in adulthood. Which area can you grow in (love, honesty, joy, encouragement, peace, and forgiveness) so that it’s easier to rid yourself of old behaviors?
6. Have you ever had an intense craving for a specific food? If so, were you able to stop thinking about it before you finally were able to eat it?
7. Read 1 Peter 2:2-3. How can we get rid of old behaviors?
8. At The Bridge Church, we believe God’s Word, and we move beyond information to practical and relevant application. What can “get in the way” of desiring God’s Word? What makes us lose the craving?
9. Define “spiritual growth.” Have you ever thought spiritual growth as something that way unattainable? Why?
10. When does spiritual growth happen? How long does it take to “grow spiritually”?
11. Read 1 Peter 2:5. Do you consider yourself a part of a “spiritual house” of God? Why or why not?
12. Why is the word “living” so important when it comes to describing the stones?
13. Based on verse 5, Christians are described as a “holy priesthood.” Do you think most Christians see themselves in this way? Why or why not? What attitude should one have when thinking of themselves in this way?
14. What happens when a building does not have a solid foundation? Why is a foundation to any type of structure critical?
15. Read 1 Peter 2:6. What does it mean to have Jesus Christ as the cornerstone of your life?
16. How does God use us to build His church? (See Ephesians 2:20-22). How is that played out in practical ways?
17. As a follower of Jesus, our ultimate citizenship is Heaven. How does understanding that change your perspective? How does knowing that, as a believer in Christ, “you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession” make you feel seen and known by God?
18. Read 1 Peter 2:9. Why are we chosen? What does God call us to do as His people? How can you “proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light”?
19. As one who has received mercy, how should we live? How should we view ourselves? How should we treat others?
Live It Out:
1. Consider the question “What are you building your life on?” by reflecting on the following questions:
Have you lost your passion for craving the Word of God? Are you longing for “spiritual milk” like an infant who intensely and continuously craves milk? If not, pray and ask God to instill that passion once more.
Which of the two questions are you most often asking in your daily life: Where does God fit into the story of my life? -OR- How does my life fit in the story of God’s mission?
Identify one or more components of your life (money, possessions, performance, etc.) that could be competing with God as the foundation of your life. Consider steps to allow God alone to be the foundation.
How are you being a living stone and actively participating in God’s mission? What next steps can you take?
When are you proclaiming God’s praises to others throughout your week to help them find and follow Jesus? Discover a way throughout each day to proclaim God’s praises.
