Monuments and Mission

As Joshua leads the Israelites across the Jordan into the Promised Land, the Jordan splits so the Israelites can cross over – just as it did years before when the Israelites passed through the Red Sea. In commemoration of God’s work, Joshua instructs that a monument be built. We are to remember God’s work in our past, too, and perhaps even memorialize it in a monument, but what God has done is meant to spur us on toward the mission of what will yet do.

Intro

Definition: A memorial helps you remember the past for the sake of the future.

First, because that’s what today’s story is all about.

Second, we’re talking about memorials because as Christians, they help us relate to the past in the right way.

Error #1 Ignore the Past.

Error #1 Idolize the Past.
Memorial #1: The Lord’s Supper

“This is my body which is given for you”

“This is my blood which is shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins”

Memorial #2: The Church
In Joshua’s day, God commanded His people to set up a memorial… Today, God commands His people to BE a memorial

Why? Because the greatest testament to God’s faithfulness is not a building or a statue or a plaque–it’s you.
Will you be a living memorial to God?

If you want the answer to be yes, then it’s simple: Remember all that Jesus has done for you, and let what He has done be your hope and confidence for the future...
