What kind of fraud have you experienced lately?

Big Idea: Jesus is the eternal Son of God

How do we know Jesus is God? (Let’s look at the evidence)
o Virgin Birth
§ Matthew 1:23 NLT – 23 “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’ ”
§ Matthew 1:18 NLT – 18 This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.
§ Luke 1:34-35 NLT – 34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” 35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.

o Sinless Life
§ Hebrews 4:14-15 NLT – 14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.
§ 1 Peter 2:22 NLT – 22 He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone.

o Miracles
§ What miracles come to mind when you think of Jesus? (Below needs to appear one by one)
· Feeding of the 5000 – Matthew 14:15-21
· Healing the Woman with the issue of Blood – Matthew 9:20-22
· Healing the Man Born Blind– John 9
· Healing the Man with Leprosy – Matthew 8:2-4
· Lazarus – John 11
§ Acts 2:22 NLT – 22 “People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know.
§ Luke 4:40 NLT – 40 As the sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases were, the touch of his hand healed every one.
§ John 20:30-31 NLT – 30 The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.

o Substitutionary work on the cross
§ 1 Peter 2:24 NLT – 24 He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right.
§ 2 Corinthians 5:21 NLT – 21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

o Bodily Resurrection
§ 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 NLT – 3 I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. 4 He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.
§ Matthew 28:6 NLT – 6 He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying.

o Exaltation to the Right Hand of God

§ Acts 2:32-33 NLT – 32 “God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this. 33 Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.
§ Philippians 2:6-11 NLT – 6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. 9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

What really matters?
o What really matters is who you say Jesus is!
§ Matthew 16:13-17 NLT – 13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” 15 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.

o A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a “great moral teacher.” He would either be a lunatic – on the level of the man who says he is a poached egg – or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make a choice. Either this was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. – C.S. Lewis
