From The Pastor's Desk: WHO DO YOU TRUST?

WHO DO YOU TRUST?

“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses:
But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”
(Psalm 20:7)

Psalm 20 purports to be a Psalm of David, and the writer declares that he and the people affiliated with him were trusting God. Although many like David put their confidence in God, some did not. Some put their trust in their chariots and horses.

Like some in David’s era, many in our era put their trust in someone or something else rather than in the Lord. Putting our trust in someone or something is not as reliable as putting our trust in the Lord. Actually, putting our trust in someone or something is usually dangerous and futile.

We will never be wrong if we put our trust in God. People who trust God cannot forget Him or His benefits. David said that “we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” “Remember” derives from the Hebrew word zâkar (zaw-kar') which also means to make mention of. This means that people who trust God always make mention of Him.

In this unscrupulous world, we can survive as long as we are anchored in the Lord and put our trust in the Lord. Because many do not know God, we have a responsibility to “remember” (make mention of) the name of the Lord who is our God. Let’s commit to doing this whenever we have an opportunity to witness to others. If we faithfully make mention of God, we will gain favor with God.

A GOOD STEWARD

The role of a steward is to manage what belongs to someone else. An individual who fails to manage what belongs to someone else is a bad steward, but an individual who successfully manages what belongs to someone else is “A Good Steward.” A lot of Christians refer to themselves as servants, but not as many refer to themselves as stewards. Christians are not only servants of God but also stewards of God. God has assigned us to manage what belongs to Him. Technically, everything (including ourselves) belongs to God.

For example, our money is really God’s money because He is the one who blesses us with money. Although we are forbidden to love money (1 Tim. 6:10), we need money. When God blesses us with money, He expects us to manage it according to His will. To begin with, 10% belongs to Him, and 90% is ours to utilize wisely. Unfortunately, “too many people are spending money they haven't yet earned for things they don't need to impress people they don't like.” These people are not good stewards in the eyes of God.

Let’s begin the month of June being right with God. In Malachi 3:7b, it reads: “Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.” God told His people that they needed to reestablish their relationship with Him. Interestingly, God instructed them to demonstrate their love and loyalty to Him with their tithes and offerings. Malachi 3:8-10 reads:

8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

“A Good Steward” faithfully brings all of his/her tithes and offerings to the Lord. Tithing is an important part of our faith, and tithing (10 % of our gross income/increase) should be money we set aside before paying anything else. Our offerings are what we give in addition to our tithes. At St. John, we currently give in person during Sunday Morning Worship Celebrations, by mailing or dropping off our tithes and offerings at our Administration Building or South Campus, or by giving online through our website (sjmbc.org).

JUNE IS PASTOR EDIFICATION MONTH

Let’s celebrate together throughout the month of June the 28 years that God has blessed St. John with a Pastor. Jeremiah 3:15 states: “And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.” These days, the average tenure of a Pastor with a congregation is 4-5 years. When we reflect on the pilgrimage and numerous accomplishments St. John has experienced in the last 28 years, we have reasons to praise God and celebrate!

2022 GRADUATES

All St. John graduates should contact Min. Peggy Alexander (Minister of Christian Education) by June 30, 2022, if you are interested in receiving recognition from our church at pmorris@sjmbc.org. If you are graduating from High School and you will be attending college or vocational school, you may qualify for a scholarship. Applications can be picked up at the North Campus, South Campus, or Administration Building.

Also, if you desire to give towards scholarships, you can do so via mail or online at sjmbc.org. This is a rewarding investment!

THE FAMILY LIFE CENTER

After a long journey, the City of Richmond has finally granted us building permits to construct our Family Life Center. We hope to begin construction soon! The Family Life Center will be adjacent to our current sanctuary at the North Campus, which will consist of a gymnasium, game room (for the youth), and weight room. Also, a parking lot will be across the street from this edifice.

Many of us made a pledge that we fulfilled, but some have not. I personally thank those of us who have already fulfilled our pledge and others who have made “Building Fund” contributions. I encourage everyone (if you have not already done so) to :

1) $10,000.00 or more
2) $5,000.00 to $9,999.00
3) $1,000.00 to $4,999.00
4) $500.00 to $999.00
5) Below $500.00

BIBLICAL RECAPITULATION

“Who Do You Trust?” David would advise all of us to trust God. Psalm 20:7 states: “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.” Moreover, God wants each of us to be “A Good Steward” (Mal. 3:7-10).

May God bless and sustain each of us.

Your Beloved Servant In Christ,

Dr. Kevin B. Hall, Pastor
