Never Read A Bible Verse*
*without context

Week Two: The Bible in Context
Many misunderstandings about the Bible start with misunderstanding what the Bible actually is:

1. The Bible is a library, not a book. The Bible is 66 books in two parts (old testament and New Testament) combined under one cover. The Bible is the PRIMARY way God still speaks to us today.
2. The Bible was written for us, but not to us. The Bible is FOR all people at all times and all places to know God and gain wisdom. But it was not written TO us in terms of modern language or contemporary culture with our assumptions in mind.
3. Never Read a Bible Verse – Out of Context. Every Bible verse fits within a larger narrative framework.
4. All the Bible Points to Jesus. We do not see Jesus’ name in the OT, but the whole story line centers around Him as God’s promised savior from Gen 3 onward.

2 Peter 3:16

2 Timothy 3:15-17

Psalm 23:5

Jeremiah 29:11

Psalm 46:10

John 3:16

Luke 14:26

Luke 24:20-23

Luke 24:27

Recap

Luke 24:27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

All the Bible points to Jesus and the good news of God’s saving us; this is where we must begin and end our journey as well.
Discussion Starters

• What things in the Bible are hard for you to understand?

• Do you think the Bible is written to you or for you? What is the difference?

• If you believe the Bible, why do you believe it?

• Respond and discuss how we can invest in knowing the context to give us a deeper understanding to these four principles:
-The Bible is a library not a book
-The Bible was written for us, but not to us
-Never Read a Bible Verse – out of context
-All of the Bible points to Jesus

• How does understanding that every verse fits into the grand narrative framework inspired by God help us to understand His Gospel better?
