Focus Scripture: Colossians 4:2-6
“Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity… Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble.”
Yehuda Berg
Words start wars. Words end wars. Words bring joy. Words bring pain. Words inform. Words deceive. Words create. Words destroy. Words build up. Words tear down. Words control. Words release. Words empower. Words abuse. Words strengthen. Words weaken. Words calm. Words excite. Words break. Words mend.
Words are our super power.
1. WORDS CONNECT US WITH GOD:
God, who is all-powerful is able to leverage our super power of words in ways that are beyond what we could even imagine. We call this prayer. Prayer empowers our words.
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
Colossians 4:2
Just think. Every time I pray I am connecting through my words with the God who is above all and overall and who longs for me to talk to him as he joins with me to do his work.
2. WORDS THROUGH PRAYER CAN CHANGE CIRCUMSTANCES:
And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message . . .
Colossians 4:3a
Ever asked God for an opportunity to share Jesus with others? Ever asked others to pray for you to discover an opportunity to step through a door and point Jesus out to someone else? What if we got up each day and said, “God I am looking for an opportunity to introduce someone to Jesus. Please provide an opportunity for me today.”
First, I need to be in a place where there is a door.
Second, I need to look for an open door.
* There are some things God will not do whether we pray about them or not
* There are some things God will do whether we pray about them or not.
* But there are some things God will only do if we pray about them.
3. WORDS THROUGH PRAYER CAN EMPOWER OTHERS:
. . . so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.
Colossians 4:3b-4
So, Paul is asking others to pray that he would have courage and clarity as he introduces people to Jesus. For courage he says, “that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ.” When it comes to clarity he states “Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.”
4. WORDS CAN MOVE PEOPLE TOWARD JESUS:
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
Colossians 4:5-6
Our words reflect how God has impacted our lives, our hearts, our character, our soul.
HOW AM I USING MY WORDS TODAY?
Am I praying to God being watchful and thankful?
Am I praying for opportunities to share Jesus with others?
Am I praying for courage and clarity when those opportunities present themselves?
Am I using my words in graceful, salty ways in daily conversations with others?
What are you doing with your super power?
