Why Did Jesus Pray?
Pastor Jerry Koller
Review
Prayer is the communication aspect of our relationship with God whereby we share our heart with Him.
Prayer expresses our dependence upon Him.
· Dependence upon God keeps us from drifting.
· Dependence upon God keeps us secure.
2 Questions:
· Did Jesus have a relationship with God?
· Did Jesus share His heart with God?
“My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me"… (Matt. 26:39)
Before anything was created, there was communication within the Godhead—Father, Son, and Spirit.
Prayer expresses our dependence upon Him.Would this pertain to the Godhead? The answer is, yes it would.
God’s unchangeableness is one of His attributes. Theologians call this attribute Immutability.
God had to become man as one person who was fully God and fully man so that He may both represent us and represent God and take upon Himself all our sins. ~Anselm
Three Reasons Why Jesus Prayed:
· Jesus did what He always did before the incarnation.
· Jesus prayed as an example for us.
· Jesus prayed because of His dependence on God.

Jesus did not have a sin nature
Jesus was tempted in every was just as we all are.
How did Jesus never give in to temptation? He did so because of His constant and unyielding dependence upon God.
· This dependence included prayer.
· It included walking in the Holy Spirit.
Scripture gives us an example of Jesus being tempted—not that He wasn’t tempted in any way prior to this example. But it seems this example illustrates the statement tempted in every way just as we are. This series of temptations fall under the three categories mentioned: Lust of the Flesh, Lust of the Eyes, and the Pride of Life.
In His humanity, Jesus was like us in every way – yet without sin.
In His essence, in His very being, the Son will always remain divine. At the incarnation, there were certain outward expressions of His divine nature that He set aside as He entered creation.
Jesus prayed because He needed to depend upon God.
APPLICATION
Do you have a saving relationship with God? If you haven’t, you should do so right now. It is the most important, life-changing decision you will ever make.
It is essential that you communicate with God for communication is essential to any relationship.
We can look to Jesus as an example of why we should pray, how we should pray, what we should pray for, and so on.
Let us follow Jesus’ example of how He was dependent on God. Let us follow His example of walking in the Spirit so that we may not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. We are to be holy as He is holy.

Celebration of Baptisms

Sunday, June 12 | during worship
If you would like to be baptized, please contact Pastor Jerry or the church office and let us know.

Flower Bed Maintenance Needed

Spring is finally here and we need help maintaining the church’s flowerbeds. If you're willing to adopt-a-flower bed for the summer, please contact the church office or feel free to stop by the church at your convenience and pull weeds from whatever flowerbed catches your eye. If you contact us in advance, we can arrange for the shed to be open so you can get tools; otherwise feel free to bring your own.

Attention Graduates

As we prepare to recognize our college and high school graduates this year, we want to be sure that we don’t miss anybody. If you will be graduating, please contact the church office ASAP. Also, if you let us know when your graduation open house is, we would be more than happy to publish it in upcoming bulletins. We are planning to recognize our graduates during the morning worship service on Sunday, June 5. For questions or more info, contact Kim in the office.

Camp Scholarships

If you are willing to provide a full or partial camp scholarship, please contact Kim Collins or make a donation to FBC with “Camp” noted on your check. We have students going to Lake Louise on Higher Ground, Lake Ann Camp and True Vine Horse Camp.

Fundraiser: Door Repairs and Replacement

If you have noticed when you enter the church through our main entrance, the outside steel doors are in rough shape. It has been determined that they need to be replaced. In addition, all the fire doors in the east wing need repair or adjustments; so do the double steel doors in the gym on the east side of the building. We have contacted S.A. Morman and Co. in Portage to fix these issues. The cost will run approximately $14,400.00. If there is any way you could contribute to this expense, it would be greatly appreciated. You can simply mark your donation with “Doors” and drop it in the offering on Sunday morning or make an online contribution at
https://www.shelbygiving.com/app/giving/southhavenfbc

Volunteers Needed

We would like to resume having Greeters, Ushers, and a Welcome Center attendant on Sunday mornings. If you are willing to serve in any of these areas, please contact Kim ASAP to be put on the upcoming schedule. Thank you!
