Colossians 1:24-2:5
Do you, as a follower of Jesus, know where your wealth is and how to tap into it?
Paul identifies it in Colossians 1:24-2:5 where in . . .
1:26 he calls it “the mystery”
1:27 he calls it “this mystery”
2:1 he calls it “the mystery of God”
What does he mean by the word mystery?
In 1:26 he defines the word mystery by writing, the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people.
A mystery, from a biblical perspective then, is a truth that was kept hidden, locked away, secret for a long time but now it has been revealed.
Paul gets to be the one to reveal, uncover, disclose what this amazing mystery is.
It is so important to him that he has SUFFERED for them to know it.
Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. Colossians 1:24
It is so important to him that he has SERVED them sacrificially so they can know it.
I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness—
Colossians 1:25
It is so important to him that he has STRUGGLED hard against all kinds of opposition for them to experience it.
To this end
Colossians 1:29 - 2:1-2
. . . the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. . .
. . . CHRIST IN YOU THE HOPE OF GLORY
Colossians 1:26-27
Who are the YOU? The YOU refers to everyone to whom he is writing. He identifies them back in Colossians 1:2 as believers in Jesus, followers of Jesus. Everyone who is a believer in Jesus can say, CHRIST IN ME THE HOPE OF GLORY.
What is HOPE? It is “confident assurance”. The word HOPE could easily be replaced by the words PROMISE, GUARANTEE, ASSURANCE etc. So, then it would read CHRIST IN YOU THE GUARANTEE, THE PROMISE, THE ASSURANCE OF GLORY.
What is GLORY? It is the title for all the wonder of what God has promised will be ours in the future. It is the freedom from sin, death, pain. It is being in intimate relationship with our Creator. It is being with Jesus. It is what our hearts truly long for
CHRIST IN YOU THE HOPE OF GLORY
This phrase drives home TWO REALITIES:
1. A POSITIONAL REALITY . . . this is the status, position, identity a believer has. This is what I am.
2. A PROGRESSIVE REALITY, an experiential reality, a growing change in us in terms of our character and our maturity. This is about what I am becoming.
2. A PROGRESSIVE REALITY – More and more I am becoming more and more like Jesus in terms of my character, values, priorities, and dreams.
There is a progression in the titles given to the Holy Spirit. He is called The Spirit of God then The Holy Spirit then The Spirit of Christ and The Spirit of Jesus.
CHRIST (the Holy Spirit is shaping you to be like Jesus) IN YOU THE HOPE OF GLORY
WHAT is the Spirit of Jesus seeking to do in our lives?
He is seeking to mold us to be more and more like Jesus. It is to have Jesus, character (The Fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-23 and a life that lives out love 1 Corinthians 13), and Jesus priorities. His mission is to be our mission too.
HOW is the Spirit of Jesus acting in our lives to enable this shaping to take place?

· Circumstances
