Jesus the Philosopher: Answers for Life
Luke 13:22-35, April 21 & 24, 2022

Prayer Requests:

Group Discussion: What’s something you’ve accomplished that was a lot of work, either athletically, educationally, occupationally or even around the house.

Read out loud: Luke 13:22-35,

Jesus makes it clear in 13:22-30 that your ethnic background or family heritage won’t get you into heaven. It’s only through a individual relationship with Jesus through faith. When did you really understand that you had to have faith in Jesus to have eternal life?

#1. Choosing Jesus may be agony! Was putting your faith in Jesus an easy or natural thing to do or did it take time and stress? In vs. 25-27 Jesus says the head of the house will say to those locked out, “I do not know where you are from.” Yet they are Israelites who descended from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, so Jesus does know where they are from! Jesus is saying being an Israelite doesn’t matter unless they put their faith in Jesus personally in the same way their ancestors did. Do you have an ancestor that was a good example of being a Jesus follower?
#2. Choosing Jesus may make enemies! In vs. 33, Jesus says that He must perish inside of Jerusalem because those in Israel who made strong stands of faith didn’t make friends in the leadership of Jerusalem. When we look through the Old Testament we find stories of Kings who worshipped other gods and put God’s prophets to death. Do you find today that non-followers of Jesus have as much respect for strong followers if Jesus as they do for great athletes or highly successful people? Have you ever had to work through a stressful relationship with someone because of your faith in Christ?
#3. Choosing Jesus can be too late! In vs. 35 Jesus says ultimately every person will say “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” Paul says the same thing in Phil. 2:10, “…at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth.” Every person will ultimately recognize that Jesus is the God of the Universe! Do you pray for people to come to know Jesus? Have you ever personally led someone to faith in Jesus or been an influence in someone’s life? Who are you praying for to come to faith? Do you use your Oikos card to pray for people?
Family Time: Read Luke 13:24 &25 to your kids. Use 2 rooms in your house, (the kitchen would be great if it works) with a door between them to illustrate what Jesus says. Emphasize that God wants them to be in His room with them so that they can have a party with lots of great food and dessert!
