An Empty Tomb
John 20:1-18
Pastor Jerry Koller
John 20:1-18
Pastor Jerry Koller
Setting:
· A few days earlier, Jesus was arrested.
· He was beaten and crucified.
· He died and was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea.
· Pontius Pilate ordered the tomb to be sealed and secured.

· He died and was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea.
· Pontius Pilate ordered the tomb to be sealed and secured.
Burial Custom:
· The body of a deceased person would be wrapped in linen cloth.
· Dried spices would have been placed into the wrap to cover the odor of the decomposing body.
· A lined sheet would be placed over the body.
· Another cloth was placed over the head.
· Liquid spices would be applied to the body.

This appears to be the first record of any disciple actually believing in the resurrection even though Jesus often talked about His death and resurrection.
A more complete translation of the word “Rabbonai” would be “my loving Master.”
In the first part of verse 17, Jesus tells Mary, Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father.
· Some believe Jesus said this to Mary because of the kind of body He had—one that should not be touched or embraced until after He ascends into heaven.
· Some feel Jesus was more like a disembodied spirit who appeared to have a body, but one that was not physical.
· The body Jesus has is a glorified body just like the one we will receive when He comes again.
· Jesus did not want to be detained from what He had to do.
