Me, Everyone, You
Part 2
2 Tim. 3:10-17
Pastor Jerry Koller
Review: in verse 14, Paul wanted Timothy to continue in a few things. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, (vs. 14)
The next verse, verse 15, addresses another thing Timothy is to continue in. It has to do with the Holy Scriptures...and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (vs. 15)
The word infancy may also be translated childhood.
From Genesis on, God’s plan to redeem a people for Himself is revealed. Not only do the Scriptures make clear the way to salvation, they make clear that the only way to salvation is through Jesus Christ.
Verse 16
The word inspired, in the ancient language, is a compound word. It includes the word theos which means God. The other word joined to theos is pneustos, which means "spirit," or "breath."
Another passage that helps us understand how God inspired human authors is found in 2 Peter 1:21.
This idea of breathing life into something is not a new concept. When God formed the first man, Scripture says,
Scripture is Profitable For:
· Teaching - The idea of teaching deals with properly applied teaching or doctrine that extends to life, that is applicable.
Rebuking (Reproof) -This has to do with confronting false doctrine and anything that is contrary to sound doctrine. (example: 1 Tim. 1:3-4)
Correcting - This has to do with restoring something to its proper condition.
Training in Righteousness - Training has to do with instruction that helps someone reach full development. Righteousness has to do with an intense desire to be right with God in all our ways. (See: Heb. 12:11)
Scripture is also profitable...
3. Scripture Must be Taught and Learned
4. Scripture Must be Used to Train Us in Righteousness
5. Scripture Equips Us for Every Good Work
