The Garden of Jesus: The Price of God's Will

Mark 14:32-38

A. The Garden Scene

Mark 14:32-34

1. Gethsemane is located on the Mount of Olives.

2. The garden scene represents spiritual actions we need to take in the face of our future temptations:

a. Watch (Awareness)

b. Pray (Submission)

The disciples were to watch in order to see temptation coming and to pray in order to be prepared when it came.

3. Jesus’ order of actions: Seek God for the answer and seek friends for their presence and prayer.

B. A Conflict of God's Will

Mark 14:35-36

1. Jesus’ posture showed His humility.

a. He got alone with God.

b. He fell to the ground in agony.

c. He knew the request was possible.

Matthew 19:26

2. Jesus wanted God to choose another way.

a. The request was not to substitute.

b. The request was not to stop redemption.

c. The request was not to stop the pain.

d. The request was to take away the need for God’s wrath and separation from His Abba!

Isaiah 51:17

3. Jesus exhibited childlike faith.

Matthew 18:3

C. A Conflict of Our Wills

Mark 14:37-38

1. By nature, we all want things our way.

Isaiah 53:6

2. By Christ we submit to His way.

Psalms 143:10

3. The struggle is in the small, it starts there.

Luke 16:10

D. Takeaways from the Garden Scene

1. What is one small act that you can show God you submit to His will?

2. What does your posture of prayer and submission look like?

3. Do you have a spot where you can withdraw?

4. Do you believe that God is truly in control?

“The Father’s hand will never cause His child a needless tear.”

Bottom Line: Keeping watch and praying are the postures to surrendering our fleshly desires. (The price of God’s will.)
