Introduction
Referees, Judges, Coaches and Parents!
When He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to question Him closely on many subjects, 54 plotting against Him to catch Him in something He might say. 11:53-54
Under these circumstances… He began saying to His disciples 12:1
“I have come to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!
51 Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division; 52 for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
54 And He was also saying to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it turns out. 55 And when you see a south wind blowing, you say, ‘It will be a hot day,’ and it turns out that way. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why do you not analyze this present time?

57 “And why do you not even on your own initiative judge what is right? 58 For while you are going with your opponent to appear before the magistrate, on your way there make an effort to settle with him, so that he may not drag you before the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.
59 I say to you, you will not get out of there until you have paid the very last cent.”
So What?!
To be loyal to Jesus I have to be passionate about a pathway:
(9 Sacred Pathways, by Gary Thomas)
Path #1. The Naturalists: Loving God Outdoors, I feel closest to
God: in His creation, in my favorite garden/forest/beach/river/mountains. When I’m indoors I long for …
Path #2. The Sensates: Loving God with my Senses, I feel closest to God in churches that use incense/art/statuary/stained glass/things I can hear, see, smell, and touch.
Path #3. The Traditionalists: Loving God with Ritual & Symbol. I feel closest to God when the worship reminds me of my childhood/younger days. I love Bible history, a prayer book, my hymnal and following the Christian calendar or liturgy.
Path #4. The Ascetics: Loving God in Solitude & Simplicity. I feel closest to God when I’m alone with nothing to distract me. My faith is internal not external.
Path #5. The Activists: Loving God through Confrontation. I feel closest to God when I stand for His justice. I love writing letters, picketing, voting, dealing with current issues, or serving on civic boards.
Path #6. The Caregivers: Loving God by Loving Others. I feel closest to God when I help the needy, the sick or the imprisoned. I love to supply a meal, a ride, fix a car, or counseling a friend.

Path #7. The Enthusiasts: Loving God with Mystery & Celebration. I feel closest to God when celebrating engages my spiritual emotions. I love to lift my hands, move my feet, shout out His name. My heart swells with love.
Path #8. The Contemplatives: Loving God through Adoration. I feel closest to God when He quietly touches my heart, tells me He loves me, I’m His closest friend, and I feel His presence.
Path #9. The Intellectuals: Loving God with the Mind. I feel closest to God when I learn something about Him I didn’t fully grasp. I want to know exactly what I believe.
Theology and truth are important to me.
Which one are you and what are you going to do about it?
Who can you encourage because their path is not yours?

Family Time: Try to identify which Path each one of your children is on and ask them about it. How does it make you feel? What’s one thing can you do because of your unique pathway? To identify their path ask them what they love about church, school, and vacation.
