God's Perspective for the Disillusioned [March 13] Charley Charlton

Psalm 73:1-7

Psalm 73:8-14

Psalm 73:15-21

Psalm 73:22-28

1) Be careful not to focus on godless people.

Psalm 73:3 ESV For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

Psalm 73:5 ESV They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind.

Psalm 73:12 ESV Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches.

Psalm 73:13-14 ESV All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. 14 For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning.
2) Beware of the comparison trap.

2 Corinthians 10:12 ESV Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.

Psalm 139:14 ESV I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
3) Be careful not to sink into self-pity.

“Beware of allowing self-consciousness to continue because by slow degrees it will awaken self-pity, and self–pity is Satanic.” - Oswald Chambers

1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Psalm 73:16 ESV But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task,
4) We need the sanctuary of God.

Psalm 73:17-20 ESV until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. 18 Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. 19 How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! 20 Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms.

Psalm 73:21-22 ESV When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, 22 I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you.

Psalm 73:23-24 ESV Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. 24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory
5) Setting our minds on the things above will help restore our joy.

Colossians 3:2-4 ESV Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Psalm 73:25 ESV Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
6)This world is not our home.

Philippians 3:17-21 ESV Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. 18 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

Hebrews 13:14 NLT For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.

Psalm 73:26 ESV My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
7) Nearness to God is the greatest blessing we can have on this earth.

Psalm 73:27-28 ESV For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. 28 But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.
