Avoiding Foolish and Stupid Arguments
2 Timothy 2:23-26
Pastor Jerry Koller
This passage starts with a caution.
· But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations…(vs. 23 NASB)
· To refuse means to have nothing to do with the things mentioned.
· The dictionary defines stupid as a word that is used to express exasperation (irritation, annoyance, or anger) or boredom.
· It can also mean lacking intelligence or marked by a lack of intellectual activity. This is also what the word ignorant means.
An argument is a discussion in which there are two opposing views that are presented in such a way as to result in anger and amplified talk (or yelling).
· Speculations are messages/discussions that express differing opinions based on incomplete evidence.
· This word can also be translated controversies or controversial questions or debates.
The phrase you know is not an informative statement that is telling Timothy something he may not know. It is a reminder of something he already knows—most likely from experience.
Jesus may have strongly condemned the beliefs and actions of the religious leaders of His day, but we find absolutely zero examples of Him engaging in foolish and ignorant arguments. Paul is simply pointing out that because Jesus never engaged in quarrels, and because Timothy is the Lord’s servant, he too must not quarrel.
Three things the Lord’s servant must do instead of quarreling: He must be kind to everyone. He must be able to teach. He must not be resentful.
The word “kind” had to do with being mild or gentle. This is how it is used in 1 Thess. 2:7—But we proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children. (1 Thess. 2:7)
The original word for patience literally means to face ill treatment with patience and restraint.
…from becoming resentful, from becoming bitter, from wishing ill will on those who are wronging or opposing you.
Instead of antagonizing opponents, Timothy was to calmly and gently correct their wrong ideas (vs. 25)
· The overall goal is not to prove who is right and who is wrong. The goal is not to win the argument. The goal is that through calm and gentle instruction, some may come to see and understand truth so that they may repent and come to Christ.
· The goal is that …that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will. (2 Tim. 2:26)
· To come to their senses could also be translated return to soberness.
1. We were all born sinners. Yet through Jesus, we have been set free from the bondage and condemnation of sin. Don’t let yourselves forget. And do not take your salvation for granted. Rather,
2. Be on guard that you do not allow discussions or conversations to get to the point where they become quarrels. Don’t get sucked in. If your discussions are headed in that direction, take the discussion in a different direction. If that doesn’t work, end the discussion.
3. If you find yourself in a position where you can’t change the subject or you can’t end the discussion, if you find yourself coming under fire, or you feel attacked, do not respond in a like manner. Rather, choose a mild or gentle response. Remember, a servant of God must be kind.
4. It is essential that you operate under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
