Service

As we celebrate service at Concordia, we remember that Jesus came to serve us. Jesus gave up His rights and privileges to be served and instead took up a towel to serve us. He invites us to do the same for others.

Series Intro
Jesus knew that the hour had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father. John 13:1

When people know that they are going to die, it can create huge stress. But Jesus responds to His impending death in a totally different way.
When Jesus washes His disciples’ feet, He’s doing the job of a servant. The rabbi, leader, and Messiah is doing a job that was reserved for servants!
“Take up your cross and follow Me by serving.” That’s Jesus’ invitation!

Why Serve? If your schedule is packed and you’re stressed, why serve?

1. People need us. The world needs you! That is why Jesus served His disciples. Even when Jesus was under great stress, He was focused on His disciples and their needs!

<Thank you to our volunteers!>

2. We need to serve. I have lots of conversations with people who serve. Whenever I ask about their experience, they say (variation): “I served expecting to bless someone else. But what I got back was so much more wonderful than anything I could ever give.”
As we anticipate the end of the pandemic, pastors have been asking 2 questions.
1. How do we get people to come back to worship?
2. How do we get people to come back to volunteer?

Here’s our mission:
1. That we/Concordia “take up our cross” and serve so that San Antonio is transformed by God’s love in action!
2. That we would create powerful partnerships with one another and our community to meet the needs of those around us.
3. And that we would embrace impossibilities with enthusiasm!
We are Concordia! I’ve been your pastor for over 20 years. I know you! Through the love of Jesus, we have the mission and the power to take this city by storm! Where do we start?
<ASK: Volunteer Ask> We need to get back on track ... That’s my job!

If you are serving in the community (not through Concordia) we want to know!

Do you remember the first of the three statements I made regarding our mission?

I love the phrase “love in action” because that’s what serving is all about. In John 13, I skipped over something earlier. Before Jesus serves His disciples, John shares some detail about Jesus’ motivation.
Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He now showed them the full extent of His love. John 13:1 (NIV 1984)

And that’s when Jesus takes up a towel so He can serve His disciples by washing their dirty feet. It was all a part of showing His disciples love. That is “love in action.”

HOW is God calling you show love through serving?
To WHOM is God calling you show love by serving them?

Our love, empowered by the love of Jesus, will transform lives!
