Colossians 2:1-8

In Colossians 1:28-29, Paul’s goal to “present every man perfect in Christ Jesus” is clearly stated. Colossians 2 follows this context and provides helpful thoughts about making mature disciples in Christ.
Making mature disciples involves concern for others to the point of conflict. Making disciples is spiritual warfare (vv. 1, 5).

- This is an example that must be set and followed (I Corinthians 11:1; Colossians 4:12-13)

- This is a struggle that must be embraced (Philippians 1:27-30)

- This is a sacrifice that must be made (I Thessalonians 2:1-2)

- This is a fight that must be won (I Timothy 6:11-12; 2 Timothy 4:7-8)

1 Corinthians 11:1

Colossians 4:12-13

Philippians 1:27-30

1 Thessalonians 2:1-2

1 Timothy 6:11-12

2 Timothy 4:7-8

Making mature disciples involves encouraging others toward growth (v. 2)

- Jesus shared this ministry (John 14:1, 27)

- Scripture is full of teaching on this (Acts 9:31; I Corinthians 14:26; Ephesians 4:11-12; I Thessalonians 5:11)

- Paul speaks of it again in 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

- Paul gives the formula for an encouraged heart in Philippians 4:4-7

John 14:1, John 14:27

Acts 9:31

1 Corinthians 14:26

Ephesians 4:11-12

1 Thessalonians 5:11

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

Philippians 4:4-7

Making mature disciples involves facilitating their unity in love with others (v. 2)

- Reminding each one of their equality in God’s Image (Genesis 1:27)

- Removing status barriers (Proverbs 22:2)

- Rebuking racism (Galatians 3:28)

- Restoring God’s teaching on genders (Galatians 3:28)

Genesis 1:27

Proverbs 22:2

Galatians 3:28

Making mature disciples involves fully teaching them the truths of God (v. 2)

- Profit = complete understanding

- Purpose = know Jesus

- Protection = from false doctrine (v. 8)
Making mature disciples involves an ongoing concern and commitment to encouragement, instruction and accountability (vv. 6-7)

- Based on a commitment to embracing Jesus as Lord

- Continued faithfulness in the strength of Jesus

- Sustainable growth patterns

- Heart full and overflowing with thankfulness for all God has done and will do
