Intro: Have you ever not been clear?

· Proverbs 3:21-22a NLT – 21 My child, don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on to them, 22 for they will refresh your soul.

Big Idea: God wants to give you clarity on this journey of life.

· Seasons – Preparation & Discovery, Thriving & Contributing, Passing the Baton & Leaving a Legacy

Scripture: 1 Kings 19:11-13 NLT – 11 “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

How do I get clear on my purpose?

· Silence the Noise around You

o 1 Kings 19:2 NLT – Jezebel sent this message to Elijah: “May the gods strike me and even kill me if by this time tomorrow I have not killed you just as you killed them.”

o Luke 5:16 NLT – 16 But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.

o What are your current distractions?

· Stand before the Lord

o 1 Kings 19:11a NLT – 11 “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him.

1. Focused time to read, study, and meditate on God’s word

a. Psalm 63:1, 6 NLT – 1 O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.

6 I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night.

2. Regularly getting together with my church family to discuss God’s truth.

a. Hebrews 10:25 NLT – 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

o How can I better position myself to hear the voice of God?

· Listen for His Whisper

o Elijah stood at the mountain waiting on God.

1. 1 Kings 19:11b-12 NLT – And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.

o Some of the ways God speaks…

1. The Bible

a. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT – 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

2. Prayer

a. Matthew 6:8b NLT – …for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!

3. Church

a. Proverbs 27:17 NLT – 17 As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.

b. Jude 1:20a NLT – 20 But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith

4. Circumstances

a. Exodus 3:4 NLT – 4 When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!” “Here I am!” Moses replied.
