Truth
Something that is real. A fact.
Something that is real. A fact.
How do you think the average American would answer this question:
What is truth?
What is truth?
Some would say:
"It doesn't exist."
"It doesn't exist."
People on opposite sides of the same issue might say:
"Some people just don't want to accept the truth."
"Some people just don't want to accept the truth."
Pilate went back into the palace and called for Jesus. He said, “Are you the ‘King of the Jews’?”
Jesus answered, “Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you this about me?”
Pilate said, “Do I look like a Jew? Your people and your high priests turned you over to me. What did you do?”
“My kingdom,” said Jesus, “doesn’t consist of what you see around you. If it did, my followers would fight so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But I’m not that kind of king, not the world’s kind of king.”
Then Pilate said, “So, are you a king or not?”
Jesus answered, “You tell me. Because I am King, I was born and entered the world so that I could witness to the truth. Everyone who cares for truth, who has any feeling for the truth, recognizes my voice.”
Pilate said, “What is truth?”
(John 18:33-38)

Pilate "said." Pilate didn't ask Jesus, "What is truth?" – because he's not interested in the answer.
When it comes to truth, Pilate expresses a sentiment that we're still hearing over 2000 years later: "It doesn't exist."

QUESTION 3:

Think about HOW you arrive at your beliefs.
If someone stands to benefit from you not thinking about the nature of truth, you should probably think all the more deeply about whether what they are telling you is true or not.
SYLLOGISM
Socrates is a man. All men are mortal. Therefore, Socrates is mortal.

ERRONEOUS SYLLOGISM
All cats have four legs. All dogs have four legs. Therefore, all cats are dogs.

POLITICIAN'S SYLLOGISM
Something must be done to solve this problem. We are doing something. Therefore, we are solving this problem.
Something must be done to solve this problem. We are doing something. Therefore, we are solving this problem.
We are most likely to believe something that is NOT true if it reinforces something else we believe.
The Funnel and Coin Metaphor
The center of the funnel is the actual truth. What we believe about some truth over time is the coin. At first what we believe can start out pretty far from the truth. Throughout our lives we should examine what we believe – even when it's uncomfortable. The goal is to move closer to the actual truth.
