Strong in Grace
2 Timothy 2:1-7
Pastor Jerry Koller
Paul referred to Timothy and his true son in the faith.
· First of all, Timothy is to be strong in grace.
· Secondly, the grace he is to be strong in comes from or is found in Christ Jesus.
Paul pleaded with God to take away his torn in the flesh.
Then God tells him that His power is made perfect in weakness.
Not only does he tell Timothy to be strong, he also says:
How will they become qualified? The answer is, Timothy will teach them.
· It is here we find the importance of reproduction.
· It is here we see the importance of shared responsibility.
· It is here we see the importance of empowering others to carry out ministry.
Timothy is given a perspective of how he needs to carry out his calling in ministry using three metaphors that Timothy would have clearly understood: a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer.
· He was to follow orders.
· He was to carry out his mission.
· He was to stay focused and got get involved with anything that could distract him from carrying out his responsibilities.
The emphasis is on following the rules. You cannot earn the victor’s crown unless you compete according to the rules.
This has to do with persistence and perseverance—which would certainly apply to the other two metaphors.
Then Paul sums up this entire admonition by saying,
Reflect means to think deeply and carefully about something.
1. We are Recipients of Grace
· Grace is not just for pastors or church leaders. It is given to all the saints.
2. With Grace Comes the Power of God
· God’s grace is always sufficient in any and all circumstances. Rely in it.
3. Be Strong in Grace
· Act upon the grace that is given to us in Christ Jesus.
· The more you act upon it, the stronger you become.
