Why Did This Happen?
The Hardest Teachers are the Best Teachers
Ecclesiastes
1. We have all experienced varying levels of pain
2. We have all made bad choices as a result of our pain
3. We all want an explanation for our pain
Circumstances: Outside of our control, the result of a fallen world
Choices: Decisions we make, both good and bad
Ecclesiastes 4:1 – “Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed—and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors—and they have no comforter.”
“The Teacher” or “The Preacher”

HEVEL: Usually “meaningless” or “vanity”
Literally: “Smoke” or “vapor”

3 Life Lesson from the Teacher
I. TIME REMEMBERS NOTHING
Ecclesiastes 1:3-4 – “What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun? 4 A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever.”
Ecclesiastes 1:9 – “What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.”
II. DEATH COMES FOR EVERYONE
Ecclesiastes 3:19 – “For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity.”

Ecclesiastes 9: “…the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice.”

Romans 6:23 – “The wages of sin is death.”
III. NO ONE CAN PREDICT ANYTHING
Ecclesiastes 9:11 – “Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.”

Ecclesiastes 9:12 – “For man does not know his time. Like fish that are taken in an evil net, and like birds that are caught in a snare, so the children of man are snared at an evil time, when it suddenly falls upon them.”
THE BIG IDEA

The Big Idea: “Confront what is right in front of you, right now.”

Matthew 6:34 – “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

James 4:13-16 – “Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring.”

James 4:14 – “What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”
5 Takeaways:
1. Everything comes to an end (Ec. 3:1-8)

2. You can either serve your pain, or let your pain serve you
Principle: “The worst pain is wasted pain.”

3. No wrongs go unpunished (Ec. 12:14)
Ecclesiastes 12:14 – “For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.”

4. Express your pain TO Jesus
He is Lord over time (Jude 25)
He is Lord over death (Rev. 1:17-18)
He is Lord over the future (Is. 46:9-10)

5. Express your pain IN community
