Knowing Whom I Have Believed
2 Timothy 1:8-12
Pastor Jerry Koller
The very first word in verse 8 is the word “So” (NIV)
· The NASB and the ESV both choose to use the word “Therefore.”
· The word “so” or the word “therefore” indicates that what follows next is based on something that was previously stated.
Ashamed (3x) and Suffering (2x)
· Ashamed can mean feeling shame, guilt, or disgrace.
· Ashamed can also mean feeling inferior or unworthy.
· Ashamed can mean to be reluctant or unwilling to do something because of shame or embarrassment.
Testify means to give a testimony, like a witness in a court of law.
As verse 9 states, it is God who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace.
Grace is not an easy concept to define, but we know some of its characteristic.
· It is something freely given by God.
· It is an expression of His benevolence.
· It must be an expression of His love.
God’s plan, even before time began, was that salvation would come through Christ Jesus. As verse 10 states:
Appointed means to be selected for a job.
He was appointed, by God—to be a herald, someone who announces important news.
He was appointed by God to be an apostle.
· Apostle is a reference to one of the Twelve that Jesus selected to follow Him.
· An Apostle would have assumed a leadership role in the church.
· The very meaning of the word has to do with one who is sent out.
He was appointed a teacher (of the Gospel).
That is why I am suffering as I am. Paul is not asking Timothy to do something he is unwilling to do. In verse 8, he told Timothy to not be ashamed. In verse 12, he leads by example: Yet I am not ashamed...
· He is not ashamed because I know whom I have believed
He knows Jesus. He believes in Jesus. ...and am convinced that he (Jesus) is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. (vs. 12)
1. We testify through word and deed—by what we say and do.
Do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord.
2. Suffering for the sake of the Gospel. A servant is not greater than his Master.
3. Be encouraged knowing that the One in whom you have believed will guard what you have entrusted to Him for that day when He returns.
· Jesus is our blessed hope.
Happy Birthday!

New Women’s Study Begins This Week
Expand
All ladies are invited to join a new Bible study beginning on January 12. The study will be held on Wednesday evenings beginning at 6:30 PM. Depending on what participants want to do, it will be in-person, online, or a hybrid of both. This group will be doing the study Elijah by Priscilla Shirer. Join this 7-session journey through the life and times of the prophet Elijah to discover how the fire on Mount Carmel was forged in the valley of famine. And how the emboldened, fiery faith you desire is being fashioned by God in your life right now. To sign-up or for questions, contact Tracy Marshall or the church office.
