Three mindsets to embrace in the coming year

Text: 1 Peter 1:1-16

1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion… v3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.

13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion (1 Peter 1:1)

Peter’s Message
1) Trust the Lord
2) Live obediently no matter what your circumstances
3) Keep your hope fixed on God’s Promise

There is a purpose to the pain... so get your head in the game!

“Therefore,” (vs 13).

You have inherited something that, a) the prophets spoke about but never experienced b) the angels look upon but don’t comprehend

"Therefore, preparing your minds for action" (vs 13).

The literal translation of the greek… “Gird up the loins of your mind”

“Your life is always moving in the direction of your most dominate thought”
- Craig Groeschel

Change your thinking you change your life!

35 “Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. (Lk 12:35–36).

Christians live in the future tense; their present actions and decisions are governed by this future hope. Just as an engaged couple makes all their plans in the light of that future wedding, so Christians today live with the expectation of seeing Jesus Christ. - Warren Wiersbe

THE THREE MINDSETS OF A DISCIPLINED MIND

1) A DISCIPLINED MIND IS A SOBER MIND
Vs 13 “and being sober-minded,”

a) A sober mind SEES the world through a Kingdom Lens

b) A sober mind SEEKS wisdom

Proverbs 4:7–8 (NIV)
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.

c) A sober mind SPEAKS honestly

Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another (Ephesians 4:25, ESV).

- Be honest with God
- Be honest with yourself
- Be honest with others

2) A DISCIPLINED MIND IS A SET MIND

“set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (vs 13).

a) Set your mind fully upon his HOPE

b) Set your mind fully upon his GRACE

“Little faith will take your soul to heaven, but great faith will bring heaven to your soul.” - Charles Spurgeon

3) A DISCIPLINED MIND IS A SPIRITUAL MIND

14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

For a believer, there is no separation of secular and sacred… all that we do we do for the glory of God…

If something can not be done for the Glory of God… then it is outside the Will of God

Our question should be… how will I glorify God through __________

Colossians 3:23 (NIV)
23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,
