The Lessons and Carols service is a traditional Christmas service that takes nine scripture readings and pairs the readings with various Christmas hymns and songs that reenforce the messages of the passages. In nine readings, the service takes us through the fall of humanity, the promise of the messiah and the birth of Jesus. Below are the 9 readings.
1. Which of the 9 readings helps you understand what God did in Jesus best? What is it about that reading that stands out to you?
2. Which of the 9 readings do you find the most difficult to understand? What is it that you find difficult about this reading?
3. What hopes and expectations do you think Israel had for the Messiah?
4. What hopes and expectations do you have for Jesus in your life?
1. Read the 9 passages over the next week on your own.
2. Take notes about which passages deepen your hope in Jesus.
3. Think of ways to share that hope with others as you celebrate Christmas.
