BECAUSE WE ARE HIS CHILDREN:
1. Adoption, not slavery (IDENTITY)
“Adoption is the highest expression of God’s love towards us!”

2. Affection, not insecurity (INTIMACY)
“Abba” is a Hebrew word that speaks of affection and intimacy between a parent and a child.

Dig Deeper

Scripture tells us that God exists in three co-eternal, co-equal persons: Father, Son, and Spirit. The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus is the second member of the Trinity. The four names in Isaiah 9:6 are prophecies about Jesus. It isn’t referring to God the Father, but God the Son. This doesn’t mean He switched places with God the Father in the Trinity. Isaiah 9:6 speaks to Jesus as our Everlasting Father. Isaiah describes the fatherly traits that Jesus will demonstrate when He comes to reveal God the Father to us. This means that He reveals the “Fatherly heart of God.”

1. Everlasting Father means that Jesus reveals the “Fatherly heart of God” It means He is the Father of Eternity. What image does the word “eternity” create in your mind?
2. Read Romans 8:14-15a. What does it mean to be a child of God? What does this remove in us and what does it instill in us?
3. How has your own childhood affected your view of God as a father, either negatively or positively? Why is it important to view your Heavenly Father differently than your earthly father?
4. Why is adoption used to reference how we come into a relationship with God? What components of adoption make this relationship unique?
5. Read Romans 8:15b-16. Do you consider your relationship with God personal or familial? Why or why not? How does knowing that we are to cry out to “Abba, Father” let you understand how to approach God?
6. Knowing that you are a child of God, how can you come to the Father with your issues? How do you believe God receives your issues?
7. If you are affectionate with someone, what does that mean? How can affection towards God eliminate feelings of insecurity that you might have?
8. In what tangible ways do you see God being affectionate towards you? How does this change your perspective about your life or current circumstances?
9. Read Romans 8:38-39. Nothing can separate us from God’s love. Is there something in your life that you feel could separate you from God? Why? What is the most important decision to carry out when you feel separated from Him or abandoned by Him?
10. How can assurance that God never leaves you or forsakes you help when you experience fear or doubt in your life?
