1.Grief and heartache are Christian experiences:
Myth: If I follow Jesus, all my pain will go away.
- A Christian can be in a great place spiritually and not in a great place mentally/emotionally.
- We see this in both the Apostle Paul, and Jesus in His life on earth.

Paul is saying grief and heartache are real even to Christian people who have eternal hope.
- Jesus wept and grieved the loss of his friend - John 11:35-38
- Jesus cried over the heart condition of Jerusalem - Luke 13:34
- Jesus cried as he was on the cross - Hebrews 5:7
- Jesus who at one point begged God to change his plan - Mark 14:36

Man of Sorrows
“I used to think people were most blessed by our great victories. But now I know differently. People are just longing to hear others speak about how they walked through their deepest valleys. The world lifts up the victorious and successful, but God lifts up the brokenhearted.” - Brian Doerksen
2. With God, hope and heartache can co-exist
As Christians we experience this co-mingling of heartache and hope while we live on earth waiting to meet our Savior face to face.
How do we meet God in difficult places?
