John 17:24-26 ESV
Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Union with Christ

Jesus loves and is affectionate toward believers.

In heaven we will see the glory of God fully.

1 John 3:2 ESV
Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.

We experience the reality of Christ now and in the future.

2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Colossians 1:27 ESV
To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Union with Christ is mysterious.

Wrong views of union with Christ:
1. Union with Christ is metaphysical
2. Union with Christ is mystical
3. Union with Christ is psychological

Mystical is too strong and psychological is too weak.

Union with Christ is judicial.

1 Corinthians 15:22 ESV
For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Union with Christ is spiritual.

Romans 8:9-10 ESV
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Union with Christ is vital.

2 Corinthians 4:16 ESV
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.

Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Matthew 6:34 ESV
“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Union with Christ is the foundation of the Christian life.

We must not confuse union with communion.

Union is fixed, but communion fluctuates.

Union is the source, but communion is the result.

Union is irrevocable, but communion is conditional.

There is no joy in this world like union with Christ. The more we can feel it, the happier we are. — Charles Spurgeon

2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
