Read and discuss John 3:22-36
1. John the Baptist’s disciples took offense when they saw Jesus baptizing people. Why did they do so, and what was John’s response?
2. What is it about our human nature that compels us to outperform others in most areas of life?
3. When we compare ourselves to others it can have some adverse effects. What are some of the negative results that come from competition?
4. What does this section have to say about churches or ministries that “compete”? Should there ever be such a thing? How can a spirit of competition be avoided between churches and ministries?
5. What does John say his role is in relation to the ministry of Jesus? What illustration does he use to help his disciples understand his role?
6. How did John’s selflessness contribute to the joy he describes in verse 29?
7. The eventual deaths of John the Baptist and Jesus remind us that serving God in this life will not always be pleasant or easy. What did Jesus promise his disciples in John 16:31- 33? How does this inform your expectations of the Christian life?
