The Beatitudes give us a spiritual standard. A moral code tells us which lines not to cross; a spiritual standard defines the life we are called to live.
The kingdom of God is upside down and backwards. Jesus flips the coin and declares a blessing over those who choose to live life by His standards. What Jesus calls blessed is what we would normally call cursed.
The word blessed means to be supremely blessed, favored, happy, and joyful. Jesus declares a special blessing over each of the beatitudes.
Blessed are the poor in spirit; spiritual poverty is dependency and expectancy upon the Lord. The poor in spirit realize we must do our part, but if God doesn’t do His part, it will not work.
Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Spiritual poverty makes you a partaker in the kingdom of heaven. His kingdom comes and His will is done in your life because you live in a place of dependency and expectancy.
Prayer is dependency. Praise before anything happens is expectancy. Their prayer acknowledged God as the source, their obedience positioned them to receive, and their praise propelled them to a place of victory over their enemies.
